The Import Export Code (IEC), often referred to as the Import Export License, is a mandatory 10-digit identification number required for any business or person engaged in importing goods into India or exporting goods from India.
It is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which is under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
🔑 What is the Import Export Code (IEC)?
The IEC is a key business identification number based on the applicant's Permanent Account Number (PAN).
Mandatory Requirement: No person or entity can make any import or export without obtaining an IEC, unless specifically exempted (e.g., for personal use, or certain government transactions).
PAN-Based: The IEC number issued is essentially the same as the entity's PAN number, but it is still separately issued and registered by the DGFT.
Lifetime Validity: Once issued, the IEC has permanent validity. However, it is mandatory to update the IEC annually (online between April and June) to ensure it remains active. Failure to update leads to deactivation.
Benefits: It is essential for customs clearance of goods, receiving international payments from banks, and availing export incentives and benefits offered by the government under the Foreign Trade Policy.
